Starlink has just made a change that could be quite meaningful for nomads and travelers; the lower-cost Starlink Roam plan now includes double the data for the same price.

For boaters, van-lifers and other nomads who rely on Starlink as their primary internet connection while travelling about, this update is more significant than it might look at first glance, and may raise questions about which service plan you choose to have.

What’s changed

Starlink Roam has had two service plans for some time now; Roam Unlimited and Roam 50GB. The Starlink Roam 50GB plan has now been replaced by Roam 100GB, with all existing customers being automatically transitioned over.

The Roam 100GB plan includes 100GB of high speed data per month, with no change to the monthly price. Once the 100GB allowance is used, the service continues with unlimited low speed data, rather than cutting off completely. As always, you can upgrade to Starlink Unlimited at any time, and Starlink will notify users when they reach 80% and 100% of their monthly data allowance, to help avoid surprises.

Why this matters for travelers

For many liveaboard cruisers, van-lifers and other travelers, the previous 50GB cap was workable, but could be tight. It covered basic browsing, email, navigation downloads, and light streaming or video calls, but required data usage to be considered, especially when being used by more than one person or for remote work.

Doubling that allowance changes how the plan fits into real-life. At 100GB, the new Starlink Roam plan now comfortably supports far more usage, opening up the possiblities for work and leisure. The company describes 100GB as roughly a week of average internet use, including streaming and video calls, but in practice, for individuals who manage bandwidth sensibly, it can stretch much further.

Where this sits in the bigger picture

When it comes to choosing which of the Starlink Roam plans to have, this update strengthens the case for choosing the lower-cost option. For comparison, here's the cost difference in various countries around the world.

Country

Roam 100 GB

Roam Unlimited

United States

50 USD

165 USD

Trinidad & Tobago

340 TTD = 50 USD

670 TTD = 100 USD

Saint Martin

40 EUR = 47 USD

90 EUR = 105 USD

Australia

80 AUD = 50 USD

195 AUD = 130 USD

Philippines

3000 PHP = 53 USD

5700 PHP = 100 USD

UK

50 GBP = 67 USD

96 GBP = 130 USD

France

40 EUR = 47 USD

89 EUR = 99 USD

For people who don’t want to pay for the Starlink Roam unlimited plan every month, but still need reliable, usable internet, Roam 100GB now feels far less restrictive.

Is it worth changing to Roam 100GB?

Starlink didn’t make a big announcement about this update, it just quietly introduced it, but for people who live life on the road, it’s one of the more practical improvements we’ve seen in a while.

If you’re already on the Roam plan, it’s a clear win. If you’ve been sitting on the fence because 50GB felt too limiting, this change makes the lower-cost Roam option far more viable for life aboard. For us, I'm already thinking about how this changes our plans, with an upcoming ocean crossing where we plan to have two Starlink Roam Mini dishes on the go.

Starlink has a referral program so if you use this link to sign up for a Residential or Roam Unlimited plan, you could get 1 month free and so would we!
