How to DIY Make Soft Shackles for Your Boat

Soft shackles have become a go-to solution for sailors looking to cut weight, reduce metal fittings, and make rigging simpler and safer. Made from high-strength materials like dyneema, these clever loops of rope can replace metal shackles in many applications onboard.

What is a soft shackle?

A soft shackle is a loop of rope, usually made from single-braid Dyneema, that includes a locking mechanism—typically a knot and stopper combo—that creates a secure, removable connection. When made correctly, soft shackles are extremely strong, lightweight, and corrosion-proof.

Making your own soft shackles

Once you practice, making soft shackles is surprisingly quick and easy, not to mention far more cost effective than buying them.

  • Dyneema line

  • A fid - I prefer to use the Selma fids

  • A hot knife or scissors

  • Basic measuring and marking tools

  • Needle and whipping thread

The process involves forming a spliced loop then locking the tail with a stopper knot. Once you learn the technique, you can make them in various sizes for different uses.
