Ghost Town in the Sand – Visiting Kolmanskop from Lüderitz

If you're sailing along the wild coast of southern Africa and planning a stop in Lüderitz, don’t miss the chance to explore Kolmanskop; a deserted diamond mining town swallowed by the Namib Desert.

Just 15 minutes inland from Lüderitz, Kolmanskop was once one of the richest towns in Africa during the early 1900s diamond boom. Built by German settlers, the town featured everything from a hospital and casino to an ice factory and bowling alley. But by the 1950s, the diamonds had dried up, and the town was abandoned.

Today, wind-blown sand fills the empty homes and buildings, creating a surreal, haunting atmosphere.

Tips for visiting:

  • Bring water and sun protection

  • Wear closed shoes

  • Don’t forget your camera

  • Check opening days in advance

  • Look out for snakes

Kolmanskop offers a fascinating glimpse into Namibia’s past and is one of the most memorable day trips you can take from the Lüderitz anchorage. If you’re already in the area, it's well worth carving out a few hours to experience this eerie, sand-draped ghost town.
