The Ocean Signal MOB1 is a highly compact personal AIS beacon designed to instantly broadcast an alert to all surrounding vessels if you fall into the water. It physically integrates directly into an inflatable life jacket to automatically trigger upon inflation, or it can simply be worn securely on your person.

Why it's Onboard

When we initially outfitted our catamaran to sail full time, we chose to purchase these units. Thankfully, we’ve not had to deal with a terrifying man-overboard situation yet, but we value the peace of mind that comes from knowing we have these devices on us. This is especially true when sailing late at night, when everyone else is asleep, or having to go out on deck in rougher seas.

Real-world Verdict

Our MOB devices are worn under our shirts around the neck, and because of the lightweight design I generally don’t notice it’s on. The units are a few years old now but so far, have confidently passed all of our routine functionality tests with flying colors.
